Agency is an Eternal Principle

Agency, or the ability to choose, is foundational in Latter-day Saint theology and is considered eternal. This principle allows individuals the freedom to make their own choices and is essential for spiritual growth and progression.

Several scriptures emphasize the significance of agency:

  1. Doctrine & Covenants 93:30-31: "All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself, as all intelligence also; otherwise there is no existence. Behold, here is the agency of man." This scripture underscores that agency is a fundamental aspect of our intelligences’ existence (see #89 ‘INTELLIGENCE’ HAS ALWAYS EXISTED).
  2. Moses 4:3: Describes the War in Heaven and mentions that Lucifer sought to destroy the agency of man, which is a clear indication of its eternal importance.
  3. 2 Nephi 2:27: "Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death."
Here, agency is directly linked to the plan of salvation, allowing individuals to choose their path.

In the Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson, agency is highlighted as a core element of God's plan. President Benson emphasized that freedom of choice is an eternal principle, stating:

"The right to make one’s own decisions, and to live one’s own life, is a God-given principle not only vital to Heaven's plan of happiness but also essential to the earth’s very existence."

This highlights that personal choice is central to both the divine plan and earthly life.

Agency is crucial for individuals to progress and become like their Heavenly Father. Without it, meaningful growth and the ability to prove oneself through choices would be impossible.

The existence of agency requires that there be opposition in all things (2 Nephi 2:11), allowing for the experience of joy through choosing righteousness over sin.

Agency is an eternal principle that is vital to our existence and central to the gospel plan. This ability to choose underpins the entire plan of salvation, enabling growth, learning, and ultimately, eternal progression. Through agency, we are empowered to act upon eternal truths and align our lives with God’s will.
