The Fall of Adam and Eve was foreseen and prepared for by God as an essential step in His eternal plan of salvation. God knew that Adam and Eve would choose to partake of the forbidden fruit, enabling humanity to enter mortality and begin the journey of progression toward exaltation.
The Book of Moses highlights that this decision was not a mistake but a necessary and foreordained choice. Adam and Eve acted within the framework of agency, fulfilling divine purposes. In Moses 4:6, we read that Satan sought to deceive Eve, yet God allowed this interaction knowing it would lead to the conditions required for human growth. Eve’s choice was pivotal, allowing her and Adam to become the parents of all humankind, as later acknowledged in Moses 5:11: “Were it not for our transgression, we never should have had seed.”
Through the Fall, Adam and Eve introduced mortality, a condition essential for spiritual growth. God’s foreknowledge ensured that the Atonement of Jesus Christ was prepared from the foundation of the world to overcome the effects of sin and death. As taught in Doctrine & Covenants 93:20, this plan provides the opportunity for all to come unto the Father in Christ’s name, and in due time receive of his fullness.
This teaching reveals the perfection of God’s plan. Rather than being an unforeseen error, Adam and Eve’s choice was anticipated and necessary, demonstrating God’s wisdom in preparing a way for His children to experience joy and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
