Many Other Books and Records

Latter-day Saints already recognize the treasures of the scriptures–naming one of their canonized books of scripture the “Pearl of Great Price” (cf. Matthew 13:45-46).

Latter-day Saints are fortunate to know that there are yet other ancient records that will be translated that contain invaluable truths about God, Christ, and Their plan for us.

We know that Mormon, as a prophet-historian, abridged what would become our current Book of Mormon text. Helaman 3:15 states that “there are many books and many records of every kind, and they have been kept chiefly by the Nephites.” These facts indicate that there is much more about the Nephites and Lamanites that we do not know but may know about in the future.

2 Nephi 29:11 tells us that God “shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the house of Israel, which I have led away, and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it.”

On top of this, there are many references in scripture in which the writers say that they had more to say but that they simply would not write it or were commanded not to write (1 Nephi 14:25; 3 Nephi 26:16; Ether 13:13).

The Gospel of John informs us that “there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen” (John 21:25). Latter-day Saints take this statement very seriously.

Even given the 2492 pages of canonized scripture Latter-day Saints seek to read and understand, it is remarkable, audacious, and inspiring that we expect the revelation of even more. Truly, we await the day where the Lord will come again and “reveal all things–things which have passed, and hidden things which no man knew…things most precious…things that are in the earth, and upon the earth, and in heaven” (Doctrine & Covenants 101:32–34). We expect these things to be “many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God” (Articles of Faith 1:9).
