“Zion” – the Pure in Heart

Zion, as understood in the revelations given through the Prophet Joseph Smith, is not merely a physical location but a spiritual condition defined by purity of heart. The Lord declared in Doctrine & Covenants 97:21, "Therefore, verily, thus saith the Lord, let Zion rejoice, for this is Zion—THE PURE IN HEART." This statement encapsulates a fundamental principle that distinguishes the concept of Zion within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Zion is more than a city or a gathering place; it is a state of being, a level of spiritual refinement achieved by individuals who align their hearts and actions with the will of God.

The association between Zion and purity of heart finds deep roots in both ancient and modern revelation. The scriptural record describes the city of Enoch, where the inhabitants "were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them" (Moses 7:18). The Lord's acceptance of Enoch’s people and their translation into His presence establishes an archetype for Zion as a society of holiness and unity. The same principles underlie the commandment given in the early days of the Restoration for the Saints to establish Zion in preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. Zion is not merely a place to be built but a people to be refined, a collective body whose sanctification allows them to dwell in God's presence.

Purity of heart is emphasized repeatedly in scripture as a requirement for seeing God and dwelling in His kingdom. The Savior taught, "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). This beatitude underscores the direct relationship between personal holiness and divine encounter. The establishment of Zion thus becomes both an individual and communal endeavor, requiring personal sanctification and collective unity. The call to establish Zion has always been accompanied by commandments to live higher laws, including the law of consecration, which requires Saints to dedicate their means, time, and efforts to the building up of God's kingdom. This willingness to sacrifice and place all things in common reflects the celestial standard to which Zion aspires.

The Restoration uniquely situates Zion as both a present aspiration and a future reality. While other religious traditions may hold ideals of communal holiness or utopian societies, the revealed understanding of Zion encompasses the entire plan of salvation. It is a society where the highest blessings of the gospel are realized, where individuals live in a state of readiness to receive the Lord. The work of temples is central to this process, as temple ordinances prepare individuals to become Zion-like by making covenants that purify and sanctify. The sealing power, priesthood ordinances, and endowments received in temples provide the necessary means for individuals to qualify as the pure in heart.

The call to become Zion brings profound spiritual privileges. The Lord promises that Zion will be a place of protection, refuge, and peace. Doctrine & Covenants 45:66-67 describes Zion as "a land of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety for the saints of the Most High God." This promise underscores the divine assurance that those who purify their hearts and live in harmony with Zion’s principles will be preserved in times of turmoil. Furthermore, the unification of the Saints in Zion enables them to build a community where revelation flows freely, where charity is the guiding principle, and where the powers of heaven are manifest.

The understanding that Zion is the pure in heart establishes an unparalleled spiritual aspiration. The commandment to build Zion is not an abstract or historical endeavor but an immediate and personal call to sanctification. Those who embrace this principle find themselves engaged in the work of transformation, preparing individually and collectively for the return of Jesus Christ. The promises associated with Zion are extraordinary—protection, unity, divine power, and the eventual ability to dwell in the presence of God. Such blessings distinguish the doctrine of Zion as a unique and exclusive gift revealed through the Restoration, offering a vision of holiness and unity that transcends worldly expectations and prepares the faithful for eternal life in the presence of their Redeemer.
