Inspired Speech Becomes Scripture

Latter-day Saints already have a broader concept of what scripture is. We accept 2,492 pages as canonized, holy scripture including the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. This scripture has come mostly by revelation through the Holy Spirit to God’s duly appointed prophets, seers, and revelators.

The Holy Spirit is said to be able to allow us to “know the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:5). Christ is recorded as telling His disciples “when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come” (John 16:13)

Adding to Latter-day Saints’ audacious concept of scripture, the Doctrine & Covenants teaches that the words given to missionaries by the power of the Holy Ghost are scripture. The text from the relevant passage reads as follows:

My servant, Orson Hyde, was called by his ordination to proclaim the everlasting gospel, by the Spirit of the living God, from people to people, and from land to land, in the congregations of the wicked, in their synagogues, reasoning with and expounding all scriptures unto them. And, behold, and lo, this is an ensample unto all those who were ordained unto this priesthood, whose mission is appointed unto them to go forth—and this is the ensample unto them, that they shall speak as they are moved upon by the Holy Ghost. And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation. Behold, this is the promise of the Lord unto you, O ye my servants.

Latter-day Saint missionaries have already been given many blessings for their service (Doctrine & Covenants 18:10, 14–16; 31:3–5; 71:9; 84:80, 85, 88; 100:5–8). Surely this is one of those blessings.
