Keys

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the recognition of priesthood keys is a crucial element in discerning the truthfulness or falsity of certain kinds of revelation. Priesthood keys are the authority and responsibility to govern and direct the work of the Church, and they are integral to the proper administration of gospel ordinances, the execution of the Lord's will, and the validation of prophetic guidance. The keys are given to specific individuals, most notably the president of the Church, who is seen as the prophet, seer, and revelator for the entire body of Saints. The role of priesthood keys, then, is not only administrative but also doctrinal, for they serve as the means by which revelation is authenticated and directed in the Church. Through the exercise of these keys, both the veracity and the boundaries of divine revelation are defined and maintained.

The concept of priesthood keys has its foundation in scripture, specifically in the Doctrine & Covenants, where the Lord makes clear that certain authority is granted to His chosen servants to direct His work. In Doctrine & Covenants 112:30, the Lord teaches that the keys of the kingdom are committed unto men. These keys are a sacred trust, given to certain individuals in the Church who have been called and ordained to hold them. The president of the Church holds all the keys of the priesthood, and those who serve as leaders at various levels of the Church receive portions of the priesthood keys according to their stewardship. This structure ensures that authority to receive and direct revelation is always associated with the keys, making it clear that any revelation, whether personal or collective, must be received within the context of this divine authority.

For Latter-day Saints, the recognition of priesthood keys is essential in determining the veracity of revelation. If a teaching, practice, or doctrine is presented outside of the authority of the priesthood keys, it cannot be considered authentic, as it would lack the divine sanction that comes with the keys. The Lord Himself indicated this principle when He spoke to the Prophet Joseph Smith in Doctrine & Covenants 1:38: “Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.” This means that revelation given through the rightful holders of the priesthood keys is as valid as if it came directly from the Lord. This understanding is crucial in the Latter-day Saint faith, for it assures members that they are not left to their own devices in determining divine will, but that a divinely appointed structure exists through which truth is confirmed and falsity is corrected.

One of the most significant roles of priesthood keys is to ensure the proper authority is used to organize and administer the ordinances of salvation, including baptism, the sacrament, temple work, and others. These ordinances are central to the doctrine of the Church, and they can only be valid when performed by those who hold the priesthood keys. In this way, priesthood keys act as a touchstone by which the authenticity of divine revelation can be measured. If a practice or ordinance is being administered without proper priesthood authority, it is not considered valid in the eyes of the Church, regardless of the sincerity or claims of the individuals involved.

The ability to recognize the veracity of revelation is further bolstered by the testimony of the Holy Ghost, which is promised to those who faithfully seek it and who are in alignment with the guidance of the priesthood. The Holy Ghost functions as a companion to priesthood keys in confirming truth. When a revelation is in harmony with the authority and direction provided by the priesthood keys, the Holy Ghost bears witness of its truth, granting individuals personal confirmation of its validity. The Holy Ghost works in tandem with priesthood authority to verify truth, providing an inner, spiritual witness that complements the outward, authoritative guidance given by those holding the keys.

The recognition of priesthood keys also serves as a safeguard against the proliferation of false revelation. Just as the Lord has given His servants the keys to unlock the truths of His gospel, He has also established clear boundaries to prevent error from entering into His Church. If someone were to claim revelation or divine guidance outside of this structure, their message would not be accepted as valid by the faithful, as it would be seen as unauthorized and without priesthood backing.

One of the distinctive aspects of the Latter-day Saint understanding of priesthood keys is the belief that such keys are not just symbolic or metaphysical but are tied to real authority with practical implications. This is a key difference between Latter-day Saint theology and other Christian traditions. While many Christian groups believe in the concept of divine revelation, few adhere to the idea that priesthood keys, as a form of authority granted to specific individuals, are necessary for the legitimate reception and dissemination of revelation. Most Christian traditions accept that individuals can receive personal inspiration or guidance, but they do not hold the view that any sort of centralized, divinely ordained priesthood authority is necessary for the validation of such revelation. In contrast, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints maintains that the keys of the priesthood are essential to the reception, confirmation, and dissemination of divine guidance, and without the keys, no revelation is considered fully valid.

The recognition of priesthood keys also fosters a sense of order and unity in the Church. By recognizing that priesthood authority is the definitive means through which revelation is confirmed, Latter-day Saints are provided with a clear standard against which they can measure truth. This not only guards against false teachings but also unites the members in their faith and practice, as they can trust that the revelations given to leaders are aligned with the divine will. Furthermore, the reverence for priesthood keys encourages humility and a recognition of divine order. It helps Latter-day Saints to understand their place in the broader picture of God’s plan and to recognize that the receipt of personal revelation is not independent of the priesthood authority established by God.

The unique nature of priesthood keys within Latter-day Saint doctrine provides distinct privileges and benefits to its members. These keys ensure that truth is never left to subjective interpretation or personal preference, but rather that divine guidance is delivered through an orderly, authorized structure. By recognizing the authority of priesthood keys, Latter-day Saints are assured that the teachings and ordinances they receive are divinely sanctioned and not subject to the whims of individual opinion. This understanding allows them to confidently move forward in their lives, knowing that they are aligned with God’s will as it is revealed through His appointed servants.
