The Patriarchal Order

The Patriarchal Order in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a divine system of governance and priesthood authority that reflects the eternal order of heaven. It is centered on the principle of family government under the authority of the priesthood, with an emphasis on patriarchal leadership, temple covenants, and the continuation of the Abrahamic covenant. This order is rooted in ancient scriptural precedents and has been restored in modern times as part of the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Throughout the scriptures, patriarchal leadership is evident in the lives of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Adam, as the first man, held priesthood authority and presided over his family under divine direction (Moses 5:4-12). Abraham received a covenant from God, promising him an eternal posterity and priesthood blessings that would extend through his lineage (Genesis 17:1-8; Abraham 2:9-11). These scriptural figures operated within a framework where priesthood authority was transmitted through familial lines, establishing a pattern that would later be mirrored in temple ordinances and priesthood organization in the Church.

The restoration of the gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith included the re-establishment of the Patriarchal Order. The sealing power given to the Prophet, as referenced in Doctrine & Covenants 132:19, enables families to be bound together for eternity. The temple endowment and sealing ordinances reinforce this structure, emphasizing that men and women, as equal partners, receive the blessings of the priesthood together.

In the Church, patriarchal leadership is also expressed through the office of the patriarch. The calling of patriarchs to give patriarchal blessings is unique in modern Christianity. This practice traces back to biblical times when fathers, as holders of the priesthood, pronounced blessings upon their children, as seen in Jacob's blessings to his sons (Genesis 49). In the modern Church, patriarchs are designated and ordained to give inspired blessings that reveal lineage within the House of Israel and provide personal revelation about an individual's divine potential and mission in mortality.

The understanding of the Patriarchal Order differs significantly from other Christian traditions. While many religious groups acknowledge biblical patriarchs and the importance of family, few, if any, emphasize the continuation of patriarchal authority through temple ordinances and sealing powers. Many Christian traditions view marriage as a sacred institution but do not extend its efficacy beyond mortality. The Church, however, teaches that marriage and family relationships can be eternal through proper priesthood authority. The concept of patriarchs as priesthood holders with a specific responsibility to bless and direct their posterity is also largely absent outside of the restored gospel.

The privileges associated with the Patriarchal Order extend beyond earthly life, linking families together in an unbroken chain that stretches into eternity. This understanding provides a profound sense of identity and purpose, reinforcing the importance of temple covenants, righteous family leadership, and the eternal nature of God's plan. The restoration of this order brings clarity to the biblical teachings on the Abrahamic covenant and the eternal role of family, fulfilling the promise that "in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed" (Genesis 28:14).

The Patriarchal Order, as taught and practiced in the Church, represents a restoration of an ancient, divinely established system that binds families to God through priesthood authority. It provides a framework for understanding God's eternal plan for His children and offers blessings that are not found in other religious traditions. Through temple ordinances, patriarchal blessings, and priesthood governance, this order stands as a testimony of God's desire to unite His children in a celestial family, preparing them for exaltation in His presence.
