‘Hell’ Is A State of Mind

In Latter-day Saint theology, the concept of "hell" can be understood both as a literal place and as a metaphorical state of mind. "Hell," in its most immediate sense, is often described as the psychological torment or spiritual separation that individuals experience due to their sins and poor choices.

Several points help to flesh out the concept of “hell” as a state of mind:

  1. Spiritual Separation: In Latter-day Saint thought, being in "hell" means being separated from God’s presence. This separation isn't merely physical but is deeply emotional and spiritual. When we choose actions that go against God’s commandments, we may feel distant from Him. This separation, or distancing, can be considered a hellish state because it leads to feelings of guilt, regret, and the absence of divine peace.
  2. Inner Turmoil: When individuals harbor negative emotions or engage in harmful behaviors, they often experience internal conflict and distress. Latter-day Saint teachings suggest that this state of inner turmoil can be akin to "hell." It's a reminder that the choices we make impact not only our eternal destiny but also our immediate mental and emotional well-being.
  3. Knowledge of Loss: Another aspect is the awareness of what could have been. Knowing that we could be enjoying greater blessings and happiness but are instead suffering due to our choices can create a profound sense of loss and regret—a mental and emotional "hell."
  4. Opportunity for Redemption: Importantly, this perspective of "hell" underscores the belief in repentance and transformation. As we choose to change and align ourselves again with divine principles through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can eliminate that state of hellish separation and move towards peace and reconciliation with God.
  5. Temporary Experience: Latter-day Saints often view this state as temporary and a part of our spiritual journey that offers growth and learning. It's believed that through repentance and God’s grace, we can overcome this condition.

“Hell" as a state of mind in Latter-day Saint theology is a condition of spiritual distress and distance from God resulting from personal choices. It emphasizes the importance of living in harmony with divine teachings to avoid such states. More crucially, it highlights the hopeful message that through Christ’s Atonement, we can find redemption and move beyond these temporary states of suffering.
