Patriarchal Blessings

A patriarchal blessing is a sacred and personal blessing given to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by a patriarch, an ordained priesthood holder designated to offer such blessings. The blessing is unique to each individual and is believed to come through revelation by the Holy Ghost. It is a deeply spiritual experience and is considered one of the most significant events in a member’s life, as it provides guidance, direction, and a declaration of divine potential.

Patriarchal blessings find their roots in the biblical tradition of patriarchal blessings, such as those given by Isaac to Jacob in the Old Testament (Genesis 27:26-29). In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the practice of giving patriarchal blessings was restored through Joseph Smith, the founding prophet of the Church. Patriarchs are to provide blessings that are tied to the lineage of the recipient and their divine inheritance (see #76 PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS - DECLARATION OF LINEAGE).

Patriarchal Blessings are intended to provide personal revelation, spiritual direction, and assurance of one’s divine heritage and potential.

A patriarch in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a priesthood holder who has been specifically called to give blessings to members within a designated geographical area. Patriarchs are usually older men who are considered spiritually mature and who have demonstrated faith and righteousness. The role of the Patriarch is to bless individuals with specific counsel from the Lord, which may include guidance about their spiritual journey, their role in the gospel, and their divine potential.

The blessing is typically given in a quiet, reverent setting, and it involves the laying on of hands by the patriarch. The blessing is unique to each individual and is based on their personal needs, spiritual concerns, and potential as revealed to the patriarch by the Holy Ghost.

A patriarchal blessing is considered a sacred and revelatory experience. It is viewed as a divine tool that can provide comfort, clarity, and direction in an individual’s life. For many Latter-day Saints, it is seen as an important part of their personal spiritual journey, one that helps to solidify their identity within the context of the covenant and the promises made by God to His children.

As Elder Russell M. Nelson stated, a covenant is “a sacred promise with God. He fixes the terms. Each person may choose to accept those terms. If one accepts the terms of the covenant and obeys God’s law, he or she receives the blessings associated with the covenant. We know that “when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.”159 (Russell M. Nelson, Covenants, October 2011 General Conference). Similarly, a patriarchal blessing is a way in which the individual is bound more closely to God’s promises, receiving divine guidance to help them fulfill their eternal potential.

The blessing also helps individuals understand their place within the larger plan of salvation, reinforcing the doctrine of eternal families and the gathering of Israel. The connection to Israel is of particular importance, as patriarchal blessings underscore the significance of belonging to the covenant people, with the blessings and responsibilities that come from such an identity.

Some have been concerned when promises given to the recipients of the blessing have not been fulfilled, but there are many ways, in the context of an orthodox Latter-day Saint’s faith commitments, to view the lack of receipt in a faithful way.160

A patriarchal blessing is typically given to members who are at least 12 years old and is often received during a significant period of spiritual maturation. Many individuals receive their blessing during their teenage years as they begin to prepare for important milestones, such as serving a mission or preparing for temple ordinances.

The process of receiving a patriarchal blessing involves obtaining a recommend from a local bishop and then scheduling an appointment with a patriarch. After receiving the blessing, individuals are encouraged to keep a written copy and refer to it periodically, reflecting on the guidance and promises given.

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the patriarchal blessing is a sacred, personal blessing that offers unique insights into an individual’s spiritual journey, lineage, and divine potential. It is an essential part of the Latter-day Saint tradition and provides members with spiritual guidance, comfort, and direction as they strive to live in accordance with the teachings of the gospel and fulfill their role in God’s eternal plan. Through the patriarchal blessing, individuals are reminded of the covenantal promises made with the Lord and are encouraged to progress toward their divine potential, ultimately receiving all of the blessings that God has promised to His faithful children.
