How to Bestow the Holy Ghost

The bestowal of the Holy Ghost in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a sacred ordinance performed by the laying on of hands by those who hold the Melchizedek Priesthood. This ordinance follows baptism and is essential for receiving the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. The authority, method, and significance of this ordinance are explicitly laid out in scripture, and its practice within the Church reflects a unique understanding of divine authority and spiritual rebirth.

Moroni 2:1-3 records that Christ personally gave His disciples in ancient America the power to confer the Holy Ghost, instructing them that those whom they laid their hands upon should receive it. This pattern is consistent with New Testament practice, where Peter and John bestowed the Holy Ghost upon baptized believers in Samaria by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:14-17). Similarly, Paul confirmed disciples in Ephesus in the same manner (Acts 19:1-6). These scriptural precedents establish a clear procedural and doctrinal foundation for how the ordinance is performed in the latter days.

The Doctrine & Covenants further clarifies the process and authority required for this ordinance. The Lord declared that confirmation and the bestowal of the Holy Ghost should be done by those holding the Melchizedek Priesthood (Doctrine & Covenants 20:68). Additionally, Doctrine & Covenants 33:15 emphasizes the necessity of both water baptism and the baptism of fire, or the reception of the Holy Ghost, to become fully cleansed and spiritually renewed. The ordinance is typically performed in a Church meeting or in a sacred setting, wherein Melchizedek Priesthood holders place their hands upon the recipient’s head and pronounce a blessing, explicitly stating that they confer the gift of the Holy Ghost.

This ordinance is exclusive to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in its full and authoritative form. While many Christian traditions speak of receiving the Holy Ghost, the Latter-day Saint understanding asserts that the gift of the Holy Ghost is only conferred through proper priesthood authority, restored through Joseph Smith. Other Christian denominations may teach of the Spirit’s influence through personal faith, sacraments, or charismatic experiences, but they do not claim the necessity of priesthood authority in the same way. The Church teaches that while the Holy Ghost may inspire and guide all people at times, His constant companionship is conditional upon receiving this ordinance through the authorized priesthood.

This understanding of the bestowal of the Holy Ghost carries profound implications. It affirms the necessity of divine authority in administering saving ordinances, reinforcing the role of priesthood keys in the governance of Christ’s Church. It also highlights the doctrine that the Holy Ghost is a sanctifier, integral to an individual’s spiritual transformation and endurance in faith. Through this ordinance, individuals are given a divine gift that provides revelation, comfort, and the assurance of truth.

This teaching stands in contrast to other religious traditions, which may not distinguish between the Holy Ghost’s general influence and the gift of the Holy Ghost as a covenantal blessing. The uniqueness of this ordinance within the Church underscores its role in the plan of salvation, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey of discipleship. The bestowal of the Holy Ghost, as performed under proper priesthood authority, represents both a doctrinal and procedural distinction that sets the Church apart in its understanding and administration of divine ordinances.
