The Savior Will Appear to the Jews in Jerusalem

The return of Jesus Christ to the earth will be a moment of great significance, bringing about the fulfillment of ancient prophecies and the restoration of divine order. Among the most dramatic and sacred events associated with His Second Coming is His prophesied appearance to the Jews at Jerusalem. This moment, foretold by both Old Testament prophets and modern revelation, will mark the culmination of centuries of expectation and suffering, as the Jewish people recognize their long-awaited Messiah.

Zechariah prophesied of a time when Jerusalem would be besieged by great armies, leading to immense suffering among its inhabitants. He declared, “For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city” (Zechariah 14:2). This prophecy describes a period of great turmoil and distress in Jerusalem, a scene that echoes the long history of hardship endured by the Jewish people. Yet, Zechariah’s vision does not end in despair. At the moment of greatest crisis, divine intervention will occur: “Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle” (Zechariah 14:3). The Lord Himself will come to deliver His people, an event that will change the course of history and fulfill the ancient covenants made with Israel.

Zechariah further describes the manner of the Lord’s coming, stating, “And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south” (Zechariah 14:4). The physical splitting of the Mount of Olives at Christ’s return symbolizes both His power over the elements and the dramatic nature of His arrival. This miraculous event will not only provide a means of escape for those in Jerusalem but will also serve as an undeniable sign that the Messiah has come.

Modern revelation through the Doctrine & Covenants confirms and expands upon Zechariah’s prophecy. The Lord revealed, “And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: What are these wounds in thine hands and in thy feet? Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them: These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified. I am the Son of God” (Doctrine & Covenants 45:51–52). This moment will be one of profound realization and reconciliation, as the Jewish people recognize the Savior whom their ancestors rejected. The poignancy of this revelation underscores the mercy and long-suffering nature of Christ, who has never abandoned His covenant people.

The significance of this appearance extends beyond the Jewish people to all the world. The Second Coming of Christ will be a global event, yet His personal appearance to the Jews at Jerusalem holds a unique place in the prophetic timeline. This event fulfills the covenant that God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, reaffirming that His promises to their descendants remain intact. It also serves as a powerful demonstration of the Savior’s love and willingness to forgive, as He offers redemption even to those who once denied Him.

Other Christian traditions acknowledge that Christ will return to the earth, but interpretations of His appearance in Jerusalem vary widely. Many believe that His coming will not be tied to a specific location, while others see His return as purely symbolic rather than literal. The teachings of the Church affirm that Christ’s coming will be both literal and personal, with His appearance on the Mount of Olives being a key event that will lead to the eventual redemption of Israel.

Understanding and anticipating this event carries great spiritual significance. Recognizing that Christ will fulfill His ancient promises instills confidence in His words and deepens faith in the Restoration. It also places modern disciples in a position of responsibility—to prepare the world for His coming and to assist in the gathering of Israel, both spiritually and physically. The knowledge that the Savior will appear to the Jews in Jerusalem serves as a reminder of His perfect love, His divine justice, and the reality of His atoning mission. Those who embrace this truth find themselves drawn closer to the Savior, strengthened in their faith, and filled with anticipation for the day when all will witness the fulfillment of prophecy and the triumph of the Redeemer of Israel.
