A Bright, Hopeful and Optimistic Future . . .

The scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints repeatedly affirm that faith in Jesus Christ dispels fear and that the future is bright for those who trust in Him. Throughout sacred writ, divine assurances are extended to the faithful, testifying that the challenges of mortality do not overshadow the ultimate triumph of righteousness. This theme is woven throughout the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants, and the teachings of modern prophets, encouraging disciples of Christ to move forward with confidence and hope.

The Book of Mormon contains some of the most profound invitations to embrace faith and reject fear. The prophet Nephi declared that disciples of Christ must press forward with "a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men" (2 Nephi 31:20). Hope, in this context, is not mere wishful thinking but a firm expectation that the Lord will fulfill His promises. Moroni further testified that Christ has all power, that He works miracles (see #162 THE AGE OF MIRACLES - MIRACLES HAVE NOT CEASED), and that His covenant people need not be dismayed by worldly opposition (Mormon 9:15-20). These passages affirm that fear and despair find no place in a heart filled with faith in Jesus Christ and His redeeming work.

Modern prophets have consistently reiterated this message of hope and assurance. President Howard W. Hunter testified that Latter-day Saints live in "one of the greatest eras of the Restoration and therefore one of the greatest eras in any dispensation." He rejected the notion that present difficulties are unparalleled, reassuring the Saints that "things have been worse and they will always get better."224 His words echo the sentiments of earlier prophets who saw the last days not as a time of despair but as an era of unparalleled spiritual opportunity.

Joseph Smith himself testified that ancient prophets, priests, and kings looked forward to the latter days with "peculiar delight" (History of the Church, 4:609-10). This perspective offers a profound shift in understanding the last days—not as a time of overwhelming calamity but as the long-anticipated fulfillment of God's promises. Those who accept the restored gospel are privileged to participate in this divine work, experiencing the joy that comes from living in a period of great spiritual outpouring.

The Doctrine & Covenants further affirms this principle, with the Lord declaring, "If ye are prepared ye shall not fear" (Doctrine & Covenants 38:30). Preparation, both spiritual and temporal, is key to overcoming fear. The Lord has assured His people that He is in control, stating, "Be still and know that I am God" (Doctrine & Covenants 101:16). These revelations confirm that peace and confidence are gifts given to those who trust in God's plan and act in faith.

This understanding stands in contrast to some religious traditions that emphasize a more fatalistic or apocalyptic view of the future. While many Christian faiths believe in the eventual triumph of Christ, the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints uniquely emphasize active participation in preparing for the Second Coming, rather than passively awaiting divine intervention. The Restoration teaches that individuals are called to build Zion, gather Israel, and participate in the fulfillment of prophecy, all of which bring a sense of purpose and optimism.

The blessings of embracing this perspective are profound. Those who internalize the teachings of modern prophets and ancient scripture find themselves uplifted by a sense of divine destiny rather than burdened by fear. Faith in Jesus Christ replaces uncertainty with confidence, and the knowledge that one is engaged in a work of eternal significance brings unparalleled peace. The Restoration offers an invitation to step forward with courage, knowing that God has designed these latter days as a time of great spiritual progress. The promises given to those who trust in the Lord are sure, and His assurances of peace and hope remain constant through every trial and difficulty.
