Personal Revelation for Everyone

Personal revelation is a profound principle within Latter-day Saint theology. Latter-day Saints boldly declare that the heavens are open and that God can speak general counsel to his children through prophets and, further, that that general counsel can be tailored to the unique needs of God’s individual children. This truth has been described and explained in various scriptures and prophetic teachings.

Doctrine & Covenants 42:61 states, "If thou shalt ask, thou shalt receive revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge, that thou mayest know the mysteries and peaceable things — that which bringeth joy, that which bringeth life eternal." This scripture highlights two crucial elements of personal revelation: the proactive nature by which it is sought and the blessings it bestows upon the seeker. It suggests that revelation is not merely given but must be actively pursued through earnest prayer and a faithful heart, emphasizing the dual relationship of seeking and receiving.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie, in his 1966 BYU Devotional "How to Get Personal Revelation," explains the preparatory steps required to obtain personal revelation. He asserts that revelation is not a haphazard event but the result of proper spiritual preparation. According to McConkie, individuals must live in harmony with the teachings of Jesus Christ, keep the commandments, and immerse themselves in prayer and scripture study. By creating an environment conducive to spiritual impressions, individuals open themselves up to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, a principle that McConkie explains with clarity and assertiveness. This preparation is akin to tuning a radio to the correct frequency to receive clear transmissions, illustrating the need for spiritual readiness.93

In his general conference address, "The Spirit of Revelation," David A. Bednar teaches that revelation often occurs, as Isaiah teaches, "line upon line, precept upon precept” (Isaiah 28:9–13). Elder Bednar compares the process of personal revelation to the gradual rise of the sun, illuminating the world little by little, which invokes a sense of excitement about the potential for continued learning and spiritual growth. This analogy of incremental enlightenment underscores the patience and persistence required by individuals as they seek divine instruction. The comforting revelation that comes over time is portrayed as an exciting journey of discovery, characterized by growth and increased understanding.94

President Russell M. Nelson has taught that “in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.” 95 Sister Wendy Nelson, the Prophet’s wife, has explained that President Nelson keeps a yellow pad near his bed and will frequently wake up to the Prophet holding 1-2 pages of notes detailing the revelation he received the previous night.96

Grounded in scriptural promise, and expanded upon by insightful teachings from leaders such as Bruce R. McConkie and David A. Bednar, personal revelation requires active seeking, preparation, and a willingness to grow line upon line. This principle not only guides individuals in their personal lives but also connects them more deeply with eternal truths, making the pursuit of personal revelation an exhilarating aspect of the spiritual journey and preparing them for the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The experiences of Russell M. Nelson and others demonstrate that personal revelation can be a real-time experience for many as they seek personal revelation deliberately, consistently, frequently, and with a sincere as well as pure heart.
